Vita Ismael Ivo
 
São Paulo, New York and Berlin are considered the outstanding stages of his career. Ismael Ivo studied acting and dance in his home town of São Paulo, winning an award as best solo dancer in ´79, ´81, ´82. In 1983 he accepted an invitation from Alvin Ailey to move to New York, where he became a member Alvin Ailey Dance Center. From ´85 to ´96 Ismael Ivo lived in Berlin. He collaborates closely with Johann Kresnik, the German Dance Theatre choreograph and Ushiu Amagatsu, the Japanese director and choreograph of the world famous Sankai Juku ensemble. These very varied experiences synthesize with his African-Brazilian roots.
He has made guest appearances all over the world with his numerous solo performances, such as Phoenix, 1985, Under Skin,´87, Delirium of a Childhood,´89, Die kreisrunden Ruinen,´91.

In 1992 he went on tour with Apocalypse, accompanied by Takashi Kako, the Japanese pianist. Labyrintos his first group choreography, was premiered at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart early in ´93. Ismael Ivos previews collaboration with Johann Kresnik include Phoenix,´85, Mars (Theater Basel and later Schauspielhaus Hamburg), Francis Bacon, which was acclaimed as the Dance Theatre success story of ´94, and most recently Othello in ´95.

The later two productions, for which the Theaterhaus Stuttgart was responsible were subsequently performed in many countries around the globe.

In 1994 Ismael Ivo worked with George Tabori in Leibzig on the opera Moses and Aron. For more than ten years he had been the artistic director of the International Tanzwochen Wien festival in Vienna. To mark the start of the ´96/ ´97 season, Ismael Ivo was appointed Dance Theatre director at the Deutsches Nationaltheater in Weimar, where he produced The Brief History of Hell ´97, Artaud ´97, Kuss im Rinnstein, directed by Marcio Aurelio, ´98, Micheangelo, coproduced with Schaubühne Berlin and directed by George Tabori in ´98.

At the opening of the Cultural Capital of Europe Weimar in 1999 Mephisto, based on the text Faust from Goethe, also collaborated with the Brazilian director Marcio Aurelio. In ´98/´99 he also directed and choreographed Medea-Material from Heiner Müller, which combined actors and dancers, a solo evening for female dancer, Ariadne, a group piece inspired on three short stories of Garcia Marques, The Funeral of the Big Mama, and a new solo piece for himself, Dionysos.

Parallel to his last directorship season in Nationaltheater Weimar with the premiere of Babel 2000, Ismael Ivo returned to Stuttgart to collaborate again with Theaterhaus, this time in partnership with the dancer Márcia Haydée. They premiered in October ´99 Tristan und Isolde, inspired on the opera of Richard Wagner.

The partnership between Márcia Haydée and Ismael Ivo is continued: Aura is a choreography they both realized for the ballet of Theatro Municipal, Rio de Janeiro. This homage to Miles Davis and Alvin Ailey was premiered in October 2000. For Wiener Stadthalle, Vienna, they created a piece inspired on the music of Heitor Villa-Lobos and Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Floresta Do Amazonas.

With Yoshi Oida as director and Koffi Koko as dance partner, Ismael Ivo worked on a dance version of The Maids, by the French writer Jean Genet, realized in collaboration with Theaterhaus Stuttgart, House of World Culture, Berlin and City Theater Rouen, France and Teatro Comunale, Ferrara, premiere in March 2001.

Under the directorship of George Tabori, Márcia Haydée and Ismael Ivo developed a new form of performance in a play without words, Ödipus after the play of Sophokles. The premiere was in September 2001 in Berliner Ensemble, Berlin, which produced the piece together with Theaterhaus Stuttgart.

In May 2002 Ismael Ivo created a new duo together with Màrcia Haydée, M.-like Callas, a homage to the famous opera singer, as well to his college as one of the most famous female dancers, which was called once "The Callas of the Dance" by international press. In the same month Ismael Ivo followed an invitation by Carolyn Carlson to her SoloMen project.

His new solo evening Mapplethorpe he premiered at La Biennale Di Venezia 2002. This piece is inspired by the work of the famous American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

As a benefit contribution to Unicef and the International Peace Foundation he created together with Marcia Haydée The Tempest, based on the piece of Shakespeare, realized with Thai dancers and premiered in the Thailand Cultural Center in January 2004. Also in Istanbul Ismael Ivo worked about a piece of Shakespeare. For the ensemble of the CRR Company in Istanbul he created the choreography Naked Hamlet in May 2004.

In the same year Ismael Ivo was awarded a choreographic price "Outstanding Performance the Year" by the London based TimeOut magazine for his participation in the dance umbrella festival. His exchange of ideas with the performer Marina Abramovic in the Television program Into The Night With Marina Abramovic And Ismael Ivo of ZDF / arte was awarded with the main price at the Film Festival in Asolo/ Italy.

For the years 2005 and 2006 Ismael Ivo is appointed director of La Biennale di Venezia, dance section. His festival program 2005 in Venice, Body Attack, included a symposium, an international performance program and a photo exhibition. Inside of the Biennale also his newest creation Erendira was premiered in June 2005, a piece for an actress, a musician and seven dancers, inspired by a tale of Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
